YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, WYOMING, USA

Electric Peak is the tallest landmark visible from the Yellowstone North Entrance. The storm clouds were rolling in on the day we arrived!

In the winter, only 90 kilometers (56 miles) of roads at the North Entrance between Gardiner and Cooke City are open to regular automobiles. Still, it covers a rather large area and takes a day or more to explore. The rest of the park is accessible only by snow vehicles. To visit the closed areas, you must book tours way in advance.

Since the 2022 spring flood destroyed large sections of the roads at the North Entrance, check with the National Park Service before visiting.

During our visit, Yellowstone was transformed into a winter wonderland by a multi-day storm. Fortunately, visibility was great in between snowfalls.

In the middle of a snow shower, this beautiful coyote suddenly appeared nearby and slowly walked within 6 meters (20 feet) from us.

Since this coyote was much larger than the ones in California, we thought it was a wolf. A park ranger corrected us.

It didn't show any aggression at all!

Simply beautiful!

Breathtaking scenery! A blizzard was approaching.

This raven had a tracking device attached to its back with the antenna sticking out.

During a snowfall, we happened upon 5 elks, grazing by a stream.

Elks are the largest species in the deer family and they are just a little smaller than horses.

Bisons are everywhere in Yellowstone!

We saw this herd on the road.

This was the beginning of a blizzard in the afternoon.

The storm was a blessing in disguise; otherwise, we wouldn't see snow-covered herd like this.

It was late afternoon so these bisons were hunkering down for the night.

Early next morning, we saw another snow-covered herd.

This bull was grazing by himself.

Bison's body heat melted the snow quickly.

This bull had a puncture wound on his side - a battle scar.

Visit Yellowstone if you love wildlife and breathtaking scenery.
